Here’s a free idea, discovered by accident. My eyes accidentally blurred together the middle of this morning science-fiction entertainment-news roundup tweet:
And so my brain turned that into a “one-set show” about Jean-Luc Picard. Or really any Star Trek property—what if you created a Star Trek program on the model of the great ’70s workplace sitcoms, so that the bridge of the starship is like the detective room in Barney Miller or the garage in Taxi, and the camera just stays there all the time? The bulk of the exploration and action would happen offstage, with the crew and various interlopers coming and going to talk about it. Maybe the transporter room could be a second set, but that’s it. No planets, no Klingon ships. The entire budget is spent on the cast and writers. There are worse concepts, and lots of them are on television already.
