It’s Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day, a day for commemorating the fact that a small number of committed individuals, motivated by greed and malice, were capable of creating a moral and ecological catastrophe that wiped out countless millions of people and multiple advanced civilizations, the cascading consequences of which extended so far beyond the firsthand reach of their brutality as to be literally unimaginable, so that within a few generations entire once-inhabited continental interiors could be mistaken for untouched wilderness.
